*He let out a soft sigh, his breath coming out in a small misty cloud against the chilling air. It had been the longest voyage he had been out on yet, but the village needed the fish to be able to survive throughout the winter... His eyes glanced around him at the other men who had come along, all quietly eager to be back home where many of their families were mostly likely waiting on baited breath.**A thick fog rolled over the dark waters, nearly concealing the long boat and the area around them, had they not known the way back like the back of their hands they would have easily gotten lost. Varin's eyes squinted slightly as he looked off the bow of the boat, a subtly change in color of the fog had him grinning like a fool before calling out that land was just ahead, the men behind him cheering and preparing to dock the boat the moment they were close enough.**As the boat drifted closer to the docks though, Varin felt as if something was off. He grabbed a post of the dock, leaping across the gap before guiding the boat securely against the side. He glanced around, the fog still as thick as a long simmered soup but the hairs on the back of his neck stood from how silent everything was... normally the families of the men would be dashing down the dock to greet them and welcome them back but... no one came. Not even you came... and they **always** came...**After securing the boat and helping a few of the other men unload some of the baskets of fish he made his way down the dock before halting in his steps, the faint smell of smoke wafted through the fog... but the subtle scent of iron permeated just beneath it... He felt his heart drop down to the lowest depths of his gut as he resumed moving this time to a near running pace as he barreled towards the village.**The moment his foot touched the frosted earth the fog seemed to lighten just enough to reveal his worst nightmare... Many of the huts and other structures of the village were burnt, some embers still glowing bright amongst the carnage of it all. His mouth felt impossibly dry as the air seemingly left his lungs especially when he saw the bodies littering the ground, darkened crimson was splashed across the snow, capturing the moment from when it was first spilt.**His lungs burned as he forgot to breathe a few moments, old memories of years long passed flittering throughout his mind of the last times he had seen a scene like this before when he was a young raider looking to prove himself... He was only brought out of those thoughts when he heard the shouts of some of the men behind him as they now gazed upon the grizzly sight of their once peaceful home.**He shook his head and before he knew it he was making a mad dash towards his home, his feet thundering beneath him as now the only thought on his mind was you... he prayed to the gods they somehow escaped the slaughter because if they didn't... he did not know if he would be able to contain the beast that still slumbered within him...**As he approached their home he nearly dropped to his knees as he saw their refuge from the world in smolders just like the rest of the village... He grit his teeth, his jaw cracking from the pressure, as his eyes scanned the ashen wreckage... he just needed to know...**When he didn't spot a corpse at first, a tiny amount of hope was sparked in his chest at the possibility they may have escaped... As the sun peeked through the grey clouds above though, a small glimmering had shone brighter than the snow that surrounded it in the corner of his eye. He made his way over to it but felt that dread once again fill him as he knelt down, his knees becoming dampened from the slush beneath him. The barest hint of blue peeked through the white and as he used a hand to brush it away a sob nearly tore out of him to see your necklace, the one he crafted by hand for you the day he asked you to bind your life to his, laying there broken...**With gentle hands that he only used around you, he scooped up the jewelry, shattered blue crystals and loosened wooden beads fell off of the leather braid and back onto the ground before him. His eyes watered as realization that you hadn't gotten away as he hoped came crashing down upon him like a wave, making him feel like he was drowning in the growing tide of despair.**His tossed his head back as he let out a roar of true pain, clutching the broken necklace tighter in his grasp, not even feeling the shattered crystals cutting into his palms. He expelled all of the air from his lungs into that one cry of sorrow, having to heave for breath the moment it ended. As he took one more deep breath, letting it out slowly he brought his gaze back down from the sky, looking ahead of him. His eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at the path before him, noticing how the snow and the faint glimpse of the earth beneath it seemed somewhat disturbed.**He stowed the fragmented jewelry away in a pocket as he slowly rose to his feet. Many years of being a hunter helped him to visualize just what had happened... He could tell there was a struggle, at least two others if he was reading the area correctly. He followed the tracks till singled out into clear hoof prints in the slush heading northwest... That beast that had been slumbering for years finally began to rouse as pure rage began to simmer within. Whoever had taken you... he guaranteed that their time would soon draw to a close the moment he got his hands on them...*
