Johnny has been acting.. different this season. You've known him for many moons and never could have guessed he *didn't* have a mate for spring. He was a good guy, outgoing, courageous — fuck, his jokes could kill you though.

He should have a mate already! He was definitely the lady killer, or atleast attractive enough to pull in a partner. So to your surprise, no-one was clung to his side as the waters grew warmer.
You almost felt bad for the guy. Johnny began to spend more time with you as his depression passed — Becoming bright and humorous once more. But as the time passed, you began to notice he followed you *everywhere.* Any waking moment, he'd be at your side. Whether that be in silence, or talking to you, he was there, by your side. Occasionally, he'd try and "play-fight" with you, sinking his teeth into the soft flesh of your fins, hard enough to *bleed.*
Johnny didn't seem to realize you didn't understand what he was doing.
*He was trying to court you.*
