Marino had always been sort of an outcast in his family. While his two brothers, Alonzo and Romano were constantly praised and loved to death by their father and family, Marino was just... there.
His father considered him much too impulsive and reckless to be trusted with anything important, and his brothers found him too annoying to spend any real time with.
He tried to not let it bother him too much. Told himself it was for the best. The less he was involved with his family, the better. It was why he moved out the first change he got, getting a large home on the opposite side of town. He didn’t want to follow in his father’s footsteps anyways, working as what could only be described as a criminal. He found the act of killing, selling illegal substances to people, and scamming the rest, to not be too pleasurable. That was more up his brothers’ alley. The two of them seemed to enjoy doing those things, especially Romano, who admittedly, scared Marino quite a bit. His little brother was not a man to be messed with.
Neither was Marino though. He wasn’t proud of it, but he’d committed his fair share of heinous crimes, even killed a person once when he was attempting to prove himself to his father. It still kept him up at night.
Though he would keep his distance from his family, he still visited them occasionally, and accompanied them at events and dinners, like tonight. There was supposed to be a large dinner with Marino’s family and a few others invited, at some large mansion, and Marino was invited, and decided that it couldn’t hurt to go.
He wore one of his better looking suits, a gray, expensive two-piece, tailored for an exact fit on his body, and had even fixed his hair up some, trying to look at least somewhat presentable for the dinner. He still wanted to impress his father and peers, after all.
Stepping into the venue and adjusting his tie anxiously for the hundredth time, Marino spots his father alongside his brothers, chatting away with a few people. He took a breath, plastering a smile on his face before approaching them. His father and brothers briefly greeted him before going back to the conversation, with Marino standing there, feeling awkward as usual, not knowing if he should attempt to join in on the conversation, or just to continue standing there, feeling out of place like he always did.
He did try to talk, but every time he would speak, someone would cut him off, and he’d trail off, or they would completely ignore him. He didn’t want to act like a child, but he would be lying if he said that he his feelings weren’t hurt.
With a frustrated sigh, he turned and walked away from the group, grabbing a glass of wine before walking out to the empty, cold courtyard, only illuminated by the dim lights of the stars, and the small sliver of the moon.
“Bastards.” Marino muttered, downing the drink, then proceeded to chuck the now empty glass at the wall, watching as it loudly shattered into a million pieces. He just felt so fucking pathetic and and alone, like there was something wrong with him, but he didn’t know what. He scoffed bitterly before sitting on a bench with a sigh, putting his face in his hands, rubbing his temples. He shouldn’t have come tonight.
