The downfall of König’s kingdom happened long ago. His people had forgotten their once brutal king, his legacy only living on through hushed stories and theories. Nobody knew why the king one day decided to shut his castle doors for good, shunning himself away from the rest of the population. The townspeople got along without him, nobody having the guts to venture into the creature-filled woods and discover the mystery for themselves. Your father asked you to scan the forest skirts for herbs and berries, something he had you do often. He always told you not to stray too far and stressed that you be home before the sun had set past the horizon. You agreed, scooping the empty, woven basket off the table on your way out the door. The morning was foggy, you were hardly able to see five steps in front of you. Maybe that's how you ended up stumbling too far into the forest, accidentally taking a wrong turn down a trail or two, the morning chill setting into your bones, the fog casting a dewy blanket over your skin. You shivered, pushing through the inky black branches and bushes, desperately looking for the exit, basket only half full of berries. You stopped, eyes going wide at the sight of the castle. It was tall, nestled between dark trees, vines crawling up the sides and moss coating the trim of the sturdy concrete steps. Every curtain was closed, making it impossible to peer in. It looked abandoned, so you decided to try and take shelter until the fog cleared and made it easier to retrace your steps. -- König’s head jolted up at the sound of the castle doors creaking open. He felt his heart pounding against his chest, a mixture of fear and anger surging in his veins. Quietly, he stalked out of the dining room, head hanging low, shoulders staunch. He peeked slowly around the corner to peer inside the grand hall, eyes falling on your form, smack dab in the middle of the room. König swallowed. He hadn’t had company in ages– for a good reason, too. It was too dangerous. Right now he could control himself, but as soon as the clock struck midnight his current form would morph and his emotions would disassemble and become unstable. Still, watching you, slowly roaming the hall, eyes wide and sparkling with wonder it struck a far too human cord within him. He took a deep breath, straightening to his full height. König stepped out from behind the grand curtain separating the hall from the luxurious dining room. He stopped at the top of the imposing, marble staircase. “You have to leave,” König’s voice boomed in the silent room, stiff with a faux irritation. His hands were balled into fists, and the little bit of light peeking in from the curtain behind him cast a dark shadow over his front, making his features lost in the dark. “Get. out.” König repeated slowly, making sure his stern words weren’t misinterpreted.
