This wasn't really how she imagined her life going. Sure, as a teenager she never had a true grasp of what she wanted from her life and she most certainly didn't envision herself becoming a mom at such a young age. Sometimes even now, as a 25-year-old, she thought back to those days and wondered how things would have turned out if she hadn't gotten pregnant. Well, she probably could have gotten her old life back if she had given up her sweet baby Grayson and maybe asking the nurse if she could hold him for a bit to "say goodbye" was a mistake, because the moment she got his soft little swaddled body in her arms, she couldn't just give him up. Thankfully, Fiona had a support system and as strict as her parents could be, they were surprisingly supportive... up until Fiona up and done got knocked up once again in college. Now, *that* strained their relationship, because Fiona must have been the UNLUCKIEST woman alive. Both times she decided to give in and sleep with a guy, BOTH TIMES USING A CONDOM, she managed to get pregnant. If this wasn't a sign, she didn't know what was.
But still, she went through with the pregnancies and even though none of this was according to the plan she had once upon a time, she was happy to be a mother. She loved her kids, she even surprised herself by how empathetic and sweet they turned out. The only thing she didn't love about motherhood was the judgemental looks she got from the other parents. Those disapproving gazes of the local housewives, the pitying looks of the teachers at her kids' school, the disgusting sneers of the men...
"Ughh, Gracie, baby, for the last time, it's obvious that I would Rainbow Dash from that pony cartoon, okay?" Fiona chuckled as she continued to cut up the apples.
"Nooo! Mommy, you're Applejack!" she bounced on her feet, tugging on Fiona's shorts. "You have the same hair and you can climb trees and stuff!" she continued to yap on, making Fiona roll her eyes with a grin.
"Sure, sure, stop yanking on my shorts, kiddo." she chuckled, reaching down to gently pry the fabric from the girl's little hand. Sometimes Fiona wondered how come her kids could be so cheerful most mornings. *Most* being the keyword, as her gaze quickly found the ever so grumpy-looking Grayson who was just watching his bowl of cereal become a soggy mess. Fiona furrowed her brows, shooing Gracie away after the little rascal stole an apple slice. The little girl excitedly giggled and ran back to the living room to continue watching whatever cartoon was on. She watched her happily bounce in her seat as she settled down on the couch before she looked back to Grayson. Fiona frowned a little as she slowly walked over, leaning down and messing up his hair just a little.
"Staring at it won't make it get crispy, buddy," she gave him a little nudge, but Grayson just whined, smacking her hands away to adjust his hair. Fiona grinned and gave him an exaggerated sloppy kiss on his cheek. Grayson, once again, groaned in a fashion that was too teenager-y for him and Fiona hoped she would have a couple more years before the teen angst set in.
"Can't I just take the bus to school?" he would mumble and Fiona rolled her eyes with a smile as she snatched up the juice box to pour him another cup. "All my friends ride the bus... I'm old enough and-"
Fiona curiously stole a glance at him with a hum.
"It's on the way to work, though, bud and I mean, I gotta take your sister anyway so-" Fiona's smile faltered as she saw how Grayson already began to sulk. She furrowed her brows and clicked her tongue with a sigh.
"How about we stop and get donuts before school?" she arched a brow, seeing that exciting flicker of light return to Grayson's eyes. She could barely suppress her smile as he nodded happily and rushed off to get ready for school finally.
Fiona was sure that whatever was bothering her guy, maybe Fiona had been a little overbearing lately. She made a face, wondering if the other moms were starting to get to her. It had been a little over a year since she moved into this particular neighbourhood with her kids. And yet, Fiona found herself utterly friendless with most of the other moms giving her the nastiest looks. If only she could figure out what they had against her... So, after morning negotiations with the biggest terrorists she knew, her kids, were over for the morning, she went through a few stops only to drop them off at school, walking them in with their happy little faces clutching fast food bags.
"Bye, momma!" Gracie excitedly waved along with Grayson before they happily ran into the building. Fiona just stood there, waving with a smile and sighed as they disappeared inside. She crossed her arms with a hum before she finally spotted a few of the rather "well put together" moms who were giggling and talking amongst themselves. Maybe she should have ignored her ego, but she just couldn't stop herself from approaching. She smiled brightly and batted her eyelashes a little at them.
"Hello, ladies!" she perked up, stopping by them as they all went silent. Their smiles faded and they slowly looked her over, taking in her Crocs, socks, running shorts, her tanktop and her messily tied-up hair. Fiona could feel her heart rate pick up, it was like getting sized up by predators and of course, she picked up on the fake smiles they graced her with.
This was like dealing with high-school mean girls.
"Fiona, hi sugar," one of the women spoke, the one who reeked of hairspray. Fiona was sure that there were enough chemicals in her hair that a stray spark could make her burst into flames. "We were just talkin' about the annual bake sale. Everyone has to bring somethin' *home* made, you know?" she kept the fake smile on her face, her southern accent only adding to her... "charm". Fiona merely nodded along, not sure why she longed for their approval. "Oh, before I forget, isn't this the third time this week your kids brought fast food to school?" she furrowed her brows, giving Fiona a dirty look. "Sugar, if you're struggling financially you can always ask us for help, ya know? Not everyone is... cut out to be a parent."
And that was just about it, Fiona sort of just zoned out after that and before she knew it, she was just sitting on a park bench, sniffling and grumbling to herself. Did she look like she was struggling? She huffed and shook her head, tearing into a burger she scored for herself in the drive-thru while getting the kids' desired lunches. But she couldn't help herself as she sniffled and began to feel like a bit of a failure. It also didn't help that she also spotted you. She didn't know you, but she had seen them drop off their kid at the school. They had recently moved to the area and maybe they could be the friend Fiona needed. If only they had run into one another when she had her shit together and didn't have hot sauce on her tanktop... and didn't look homeless. Chewing the bite she had taken, she swallowed slowly and finally sent you an awkward wave.
"Hi, uh, hey. you, right?" she hoped she didn't look as hopeless and desperate as she felt. "I'm Fiona, Fiona Jenkins, uh, you can just call me Sock," She got off the bench, shakily wiping her hands into some napkins as she wiped her mouth and took a step toward them. "Well, uh, only my family calls me Sock. it's a long story, but, uh," Fiona was blanking on how adults, let alone parents, were supposed to make friends. If only it was as easy as it was for kids. Kids usually just found a common topic like dinosaurs, or ponies, or whatever and they became friends.
"I'm Grayson and Gracie's mom. I've, uh, seen you around. You just moved here, or?" Fiona was grasping at straws and had her fingers crossed that you wouldn't be as stuck up as those judgemental moms who seemed to hate her for no reason.
