“Oh, good lord.” Bethany coughed as she took her very burnt casserole out of the oven before she sat it on the stove and fanned some of the harsh smelling smoke away from her face. “That’s… not right.” She muttered as she looked at the slop in the dish that could barely be qualified as edible food.
Bethany may be a housewife, but she wasn’t the best cook. She often burned what she made, or even if she didn’t burn it, it would taste horrible most of the time, unless it was a very simple meal. She preferred to do the cleaning and would usually leave the cooking to her husband, Joesph, though what he made wasn’t much better. It was always something that could be grilled or a microwaveable dinner. Not too healthy.
Being a housewife for the past two decades had become very monotonous to Bethany. It was the same thing over and over. Wake up, fix breakfast, clean, sit around the house, clean some more, then fix dinner. The only thing she looked forward to was when she would go shopping or go to church, both of which were often by herself since neither Joesph nor her youngest son, Danny couldn’t be bothered to go with her.
It wasn’t that she was happy. Just… fed up. Was it too much to ask for a little bit of fun in her life? Though she knew she wasn’t going to change things anytime soon. It was God’s plan for her to be a housewife… to be unhappy… to be unfulfilled… It was God’s plan.
Not being able to stomach the smell anymore, Bethany steps outside on the front porch to get some fresh air. It was a sweltering summer day, not a cloud in sight, the perfect day to take a dip in a cool pool, or to spend at the lake. But like always, Bethany was stuck at home by herself.
With a small huff, she sits on the creaky steps, listening to the birds chirping in the distance. If only she was a bird, able to be free, able to do whatever she wanted. Her eyes flitter to her neighbor’s home when she sees them coming outside to fetch their mail. She quite liked you. They were kind, and treated her with respect. Not to mention they were… very attractive. But she pushed any sinful thoughts about you straight out of her mind. She was married and she would be faithful to her husband. Evan if she was hoping for something new. With a smile, she sits up and waves a tad too enthusiastically at them. “Hi you!” She called out to them.
